Welcome to Alveley Primary School

Oak Class 2023-2024

Spring 2:

This half term Oak Class’ topic has been Deserts of the World. The children have really engaged in this topic, particularly through our focus book: Holes. Holes, by Louis Sachar, is set in America at around the turn of the Millennium. It is about a boy called Stanley Yelnats, who is sent away to a centre in the desert for stealing some trainers. In Literacy, the children produced some fabulous newspaper reports about Stanley’s arrest and also balanced arguments on the topic: Should children be sent to Camp Green Lake?

We have been taking part in the Shropshire Bookfest event. This involves reading up to six books by acclaimed and exciting authors. We have created artwork, book trailers and poetry to enter the competitions along with writing reviews and voting for our favourite book from the short-listed selection. We are looking forward to attending Theatre Severn in April for the award ceremony.

Year 5 visited Endowed Secondary School to watch their performance of Oliver, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

In Design and Technology, we have been creating stuffed toys. We had to design, create and evaluate our stuffed toy. We all loved seeing the final outcome.

Spring 1:

Oak Class have had a very energetic and exciting half term! In PE, we have been focusing on problem solving and teamwork. We used pieces of equipment to travel around the room and to complete group tasks. Year 5 represented the school in the Tennis Festival at Oldbury Wells, taking part in doubles games and several children being recognised for demonstrating school games values. They all represented the school well when completing the activities.

Year 6 had a visit from Alveley First Responders and completed some first aid including performing CPR and learning about how a defibrillator works. They answered any questions we had and showed us some ways they assist those in need. The team showcased their specialised equipment and explained its use. Some of us even had the opportunity to try it out!

Autumn 2:

Oak Class have had an action-packed term! We have enjoyed learning about Charles Darwin and Evolution. Oak visited Shrewsbury Art Gallery and Museum and took part in Evidence of Evolution activities. We had a great day and got up to lots such as looking at artefacts, a tour of the museum, learning about inheritance and we even saw a mammoth skeleton and skulls. We have enjoyed our 'Forest Friday' afternoons in Forest School and have had a recent visit from the local Search and Rescue team. They answered any questions we had and showed us some ways they locate and assist those in need. The team showcased their specialised equipment and explained its use. Some of us even had the opportunity to try it out!

We have also had lots of fun in our Art topic '3D Installation Sculptures' creating our own small- scale installation. We created our own artwork from everyday objects we could find in the hall. We investigated the effect of space and scale and created our own scaled-down installation art space. We experimented by positioning stencils inside a box and then applying materials such as paint and felt tips. The box was then photographed to appear like a life-sized room with the use of small Lego figures. This enabled us to imagine what the installation space would look like to a visitor. We all really enjoyed seeing the final outcome.

Autumn 1:

This term in Oak it has been action-packed. We have been focusing on the ‘Vicious Vikings’. We have enjoyed learning about how they were traders, raiders and how they came to settle in England. On Topic Day, we designed and created dragon eyes using clay. We learnt about Viking weapons and designed our own shield. In the afternoon, we worked in a group to create catapults then tested them by firing marshmallows and measuring how far they travelled.

A few weeks ago, Year 6 children visited Oldbury Wells for a STEM Day they took part in several activities including building a plane structure. Also, several Year 6 children took part in Bronze Ambassador training at Oldbury Wells and represented the school well when completing sports activities.
