Summer 1
This half term in Cedar Class they have been learning about the topic- Medieval Magic. In History children have been learning about what is a monarchy, the British Monarchy and monarchies in the past. Children have been reading a variety of fiction and non-fictions books based on castle and the monarchy in guided reading. In Literacy children have written a story setting description of a castle and have re-wrote their own narrative on the traditional tale, The Princess and The Pea. In maths children have been learning about money and fractions. Children have been learning to calculate amounts of money, calculating different ways to make certain amounts of money and finding change. In fractions, children have been learning to identify and find half and quarter of shapes and quantities. In Science children have enjoyed learning about what plants need to grow and have planted their own sweet peas. In music children have enjoyed repeating and creating their own rhythmic patterns linked to the story, George and The Dragon. In PSHE, children have learnt about money. They have considered where adults and children get their money, where money can be kept, what we can do with money and the difference between needs and wants when it comes to spending money. Children have enjoyed developing their computing skills by exploring spreadsheets.
Autumn 2
Cedar have had an enjoyable half term, leading up to Christmas. This half term our topic has been The Great Fire of London. Children learnt about the events that took place on Pudding Lane in 1666. As part of their learning children wrote a recount, setting description and a diary entry written by Samuel Pepys. Children then used their knowledge of diary writing to write a diary based on the John Lewis Edge Christmas advert. In maths children have been learning about addition and subtraction as well as 2D and 3D shapes. In History children have been learning about what holidays were like in the past and identifying key moments and events in their own history. Mrs Graham’s dad, Roy, came in to speak to the class about what holidays were like when he was a child and shared some black and white photos with then children. In music children have been learning about pitch and begun to read pitch notation to play music. In Design Technology children made a windmill then evaluated their design. and We look forward to our next topic, next half term which is Traditional Tales.
Autumn 1
Cedar have had a great first half term! Our topic this half term has been ‘Best of British.’ As part of our learning we have been focusing on Paddington in Literacy. Children have been writing character descriptions and re-writing a familiar Paddington story. Children then had a go at writing their very own Paddington adventure story. Children really enjoyed planning and writing their stories. Paddington went on some exciting adventures from the ice-skating rink, park, swimming pool and even on a holiday to Egypt! In maths this half term children have been learning about place value as well as addition and subtraction. Children have been using maths apparatus to support their understanding of these mathematical concepts.
